The Ruhraue bridge landscape is an ensemble of so-called Route der Industriekultur

Bridges over the Ruhr on the city limits of Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr.

In the western section, the bridges are all oriented in a north-south direction.

Starting with the two-part A3 bridge (one bridge for each direction of travel), followed by a four-track railway bridge, which is mainly used for freight traffic, and ending with the Aakerfährbrücke (road bridge that connects the districts of Meiderich and Duissern).

Ruhraue Bridge Landscape (Western Part) – Industrial History Meets Natural Landscape

The Ruhraue Bridge Landscape in the western part is a fascinating area that impressively combines industrial history and nature. A series of historic bridges stretch along the Ruhr River, testifying to bygone times and offering a unique landscape experience.

These bridges once served to transport goods and people during the industrial heyday of the Ruhr region. Today, they shape the image of the Ruhraue as a cultural and historical area and are equally appreciated by cyclists, hikers, and nature lovers. The combination of water, green spaces, and old buildings creates a diverse backdrop.

The western part of the bridge landscape is characterized by natural riverbanks and partially renaturalized river sections. Here, you can discover the flora and fauna of the Ruhraue – from waterfowl to rare plant species. The tranquil atmosphere invites you to linger and observe.

Several well-maintained paths run along the Ruhr and connect the individual bridges, making the area ideal for day trips, bike rides, or leisurely strolls. Information panels provide fascinating insights into the history and technology of the bridges, as well as the ecological significance of the Ruhr floodplains.

The Ruhr floodplain bridge landscape is a vibrant part of the region, bringing history to life while offering relaxation amidst diverse natural surroundings. This section of the Ruhr floodplain is a worthwhile destination for anyone wanting to explore the Ruhr region away from the urban centers.
