The second-highest mountain in Ireland, Beenkeragh is part of a horseshoe that makes for one of the country’s most extraordinary hikes. This isn’t just any splendid mountain horseshoe either, it’s one that comprises Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh and twin-topped Caher which together form Ireland’s three highest peaks in that order. Carrauntoohil and Beenkeragh are linked by a white-knuckle arête, one of the most exhilarating parts of an adventure up here.
In the MacGillycuddy's Reeks range in south west Ireland, this is a fantastic summit to bag and has incredible views. The classic route is from the west, where you can park just north of Lough Acoose. You can turn your ascent into as long or as short an adventure as you like, depending on how much of the horseshoe you do. The going is tough, with sheer drops, narrow ridges and rocky trails. The views are absolutely phenomenal though.
Ireland's second highest peak is worth a hike for its own sake, with stunning views over the Reeks and out to Dingle Bay. The ridge across to Carrauntoohil does add its own spectacular edge to any day up in the mountains but is something not to be attempted on icy or windy days
