Old records from 1733 mention 109 public and private wells
within the Perleberg city walls, which provided water for 1,835 residents.
One such public well was discovered in 2008 at Mönchort.
The very well-preserved shallow well, made of dry-stone fieldstone, lies approximately
1 meter below current street level and still contains groundwater at a depth of 3 meters.
Its reconstruction illustrates the laborious task of drawing water from a well before the construction of the central water supply in Perleberg in 1905.
