The Austria Monument - also known as the Helgoland Monument - was erected in memory of those who died in the naval battle off Heligoland on May 9, 1864.
The memorial, a stele with a bronze plaque, was designed by Martin Haller and W.P. behrman
It originally stood in front of the orphanage on Königstrasse, and has been at its current location since the late 1950s.

The naval battle near Helgoland was fought in the North Sea on May 9, 1864 during the German-Danish War between the naval forces of Austria and Prussia on the one hand and Denmark on the other. The Austrian commander Wilhelm von Tegetthoff broke off the naval battle after his flagship caught fire. He withdrew his squadron to cover the neutral waters around Helgoland, which was then part of Great Britain
