A’ Mhaighdean

Hiking

Deep in the wild heart of the Fisherfield Forest, a region known as ‘the Great Wilderness’, is one of the most remote yet spectacular Munros in the Scottish Highlands. Hikes to A’ Mhaighdean are adventures of scenic magnificence where you’re unlikely to meet another soul.

Part of the Fisherfield Six, you might be tempted to undertake the legendary challenge of bagging A’ Mhaighdean along with the region’s five other Munros in one great expedition. If you’re content with just the one though, it is still the adventure of a lifetime.

Incredible, remote adventures in the heart of ‘the Great Wilderness’

The long walking routes to A’ Mhaighdean usually begin from Poolewe in the west or from the wonderfully located Shenavall bothy, beneath the striking form of Beinn Dearg Mòr, to the north.

If approaching from the west, bikepacking is a viable option for the lengthy approach. Eventually you will come to the charming causeway between Fionn Loch and Dubh Loch, not long after which is the Carnmore bothy, which offers a basic shelter for the night. Another great option is to pitch your tent for a wild camp somewhere en route.

If you’ve made the effort to come this far, it makes sense to link A’ Mhaighdean to the neighbouring Munro of Ruadh Stac Mor by way of the connecting bealach. There is little by way of mountain rescue this far out, so routes in winter are extremely serious, best left to experienced mountaineers.

An incredible vista awaits you from the summit. Crags tower above a lochan-speckled wilderness, with the glistening sea stretching away beyond Loch Ewe. The big hitters of the North West Highlands are evident everywhere, from An Teallach’s monstrous form and Slioch’s bristling fortress to the glorious Torridon trio beyond Loch Maree.
