The opera house was completed in 1852 as a royal court theater in the late classical style. After it burned down completely in World War II, it was rebuilt according to old plans in a historical style and reopened in 1950.

Worth seeing building with a beautiful forecourt. Gastronomy with a view of the opera is directly opposite and invites you to linger.

The opera house was built as the "Royal Court Theater" in the years 1845-1852 in the late Classicist style on the eastern edge of the old town on the former Windmühlenberg made of Wealden sandstone. It was one of today's Georgstrasse bastion, which was part of the Hanover city fortifications. The architect of the opera house was the court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. The construction manager was his employee and later court master builder Christian Heinrich Tramm. The first opera performance (Mozart's Marriage of Figaro) took place on September 5, 1852. The opera house replaced the Royal Court Theater (Schlosstheater) in the Leineschloss, in which opera performances have taken place since 1689. In the new opera house from 1852, both opera and drama performances were initially held.
