Mill structures used. After numerous oil and saw mills, loh mills
and hammer mills, grinding mills and hemp pounding, the first Baden paper mill was built in Ettlingen in 1452, from which three and a half centuries later a major industry emerged that today still guarantees Ettlingen's reputation as a papermaking town.
There are currently five hydropower plants in operation on the Alb for generating electricity, which feed a total of around 2.5 MW into the municipal utility's low-voltage network.
