Just a few steps from Kommandørgaarden lies Denmark's oldest and smallest school. Between 1784 and 1874, up to 40 students were taught here at times. The teaching was always carried out by a former Kommandør, who also had to be paid by the parents. This salary, however, was not only in cash but also in kind. In today's world, with a supermarket on almost every corner, this type of remuneration seems unattractive. In the years of the Kommandør, however, food was an extremely valuable commodity, because anything that wasn't available on Rømø itself had to be laboriously brought here from the mainland. And the hardest time was always the winter, with its real struggle for survival. The teacher also received an additional form of compensation in the form of a daily hot lunch, which the parents of the students took turns to provide.
The students themselves had to take care of the cleanliness of the classroom, and, as was customary at the time, this was the girls' responsibility. The boys, on the other hand, had to ensure there was always enough firewood for the cast-iron stove. This, of course, had to be brought from home, as wood was also a very valuable and expensive commodity.römö.net/html/romo_kleinste_schule_danemarks.html

Great school that you can visit again and again. Also suitable as a photo motif.
