Just a few steps from the Kommandørgaarden lies the oldest and smallest school in Denmark. Between 1784 and 1874, up to 40 students were taught here at times.

The teaching was always carried out by a former Kommandør who also had to be paid by the parents. However, he received this salary not only in cash but also in kind. In our day and age, with a supermarket on almost every corner, this type of remuneration seems less attractive. In the years of the Kommandørs, however, food was an extremely valuable commodity because all goods that were not available on Rømø itself had to be laboriously brought here from the mainland. And the hardest time was always the winter with a real struggle for survival.

There was also an additional form of remuneration for the teacher in the form of a daily hot lunch, which took turns with the parents of the students.
