The area near the impact site of the atom bomb was littered with corpses after the bombing. Countless corpses, even those who were pulled out of the river, were brought here and cremated.Donations enabled the construction of a temporary memorial hill, a temporary vault and a chapel in 1946. Ten years later, in 1955, Hiroshima City took over the project and rebuilt the rundown vault. The vault below the hill contains the ashes of about 70,000 victims.
