The harbor promenade of Funchal is very nice and clean. Unfortunately overrun by tourists in every season. In the shops and bars and cafes is Portuguese, English and sometimes German spoken, the prices are sometimes a bit overpriced. Funchal has a very nice old town. The narrow streets invite for a walk.
