Built as an expression of gratitude that Dresden was not haunted by cholera in 1841.

The cholera fountain is a neo-Gothic fountain. It stands in Dresden on Sophienstrasse, between Zwinger and Taschenbergpalais. It was financed by Freiherr Eugen von Gutschmid, who wanted to express his thanks for the fact that Dresden had been spared the cholera that threatened the city from the Oder and the Lower Elbe in 1841 and 1842.
