The town of Bad Bentheim is known for its high-quality sandstone, which is also called Bentheim Gold because of its color (more information in the sandstone museum). Since the Middle Ages, the sandstone has been used to build town halls, churches, manor houses and other public buildings in northern Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. Important buildings made of Bentheim sandstone include Bentheim Castle, for example the royal palace in Amsterdam, the theater and the Frauenkirche in Antwerp and the old town hall in Münster. If you believe the vernacular, even the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York is made of Bentheim gold.
Bentheim gold has been mined in various quarries since the 11th and 12th centuries. In its heyday there were over 20 quarries, today you can still visit two active quarries. In Gildehaus, where the beige-colored sandstone is mined, and at the open-air theater in Bad Bentheim. It is another highlight on this route. In summer, stage plays are offered here in a unique natural setting - right in the former sandstone quarry. The Franzosenschlucht is located right next to the open-air stage. The name comes from the 18th century, in 1795 French troops besieged Bentheim Castle. According to stories, they camped in the hidden gorge, not far from the castle, which is now called the French Gorge.

An excellent starting point for the many marked hiking trails around Bad Bentheim. The golden yellow rock walls ('Bentheimer Gold') make a beautiful background.
