The Franzosenschlucht is located right next to the open-air stage. The name can be traced back to the 18th century, when French troops besieged Bentheim Castle in 1795. According to stories, they camped in the hidden gorge not far from the castle, today's French Gorge.

I can't help you with history, but the forest paths are great and highly recommended.

Beautiful, varied route over hill and dale. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended. The occasional climb should not be underestimated, but is absolutely worth seeing.
