The building of the Settle-Carlisle Railway between 1869-76 was one of the most difficult and hazardous construction times in British railway engineering. This is particularly obvious in Upper Dentdale, where the track emerges from Blea Moor Tunnel to cross Arten Gill and Dent Head viaducts. This impressive 11-arch bridge is 117 feet (36 metres) high and 660 feet (201 metres) long. Interestingly, the viaduct featured in the film ‘Miss Potter’, the Beatrix Potter biopic starring Renee Zellweger.
