Conrad, the lord of Horneck Castle, joined the Teutonic Order in 1255 and donated his property as a pious foundation. In 1438, Horneck Castle, which had since been expanded several times, became the residence of the Teutonic Order, the third headquarters of the knightly order alongside Marienburg in Prussia and Riga in the Baltic.
