The impressive half-timbered house was built around 1520. Martin Luther stayed here in February 1537 for the most important meeting of the Schmalkaldic League and published his Schmalkaldic Articles. The permanent exhibition "Making a State with Faith - Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous 1504-1567" can be seen in the so-called Luther Apartment. The Hessian Landgrave was a leading political pioneer of the Reformation, co-founder of the Schmalkaldic League and introduced the Reformation in Schmalkalden as early as 1525.

Guided tours available all year round by appointment at the Tourist Information Office, duration approx. 45 minutes.

Luther stayed in this house for a few days during his stay at the meeting of the Schmalkalden League in 1537.
The house has been lovingly restored and today houses a bookstore.

Framed by half-timbered houses characteristic of Schmalkalden, the Lutherhaus stands with its gable side facing the square of the same name (until 1837 Töpfmarkt) and its eaves facing the Schlossberg. During the most important meeting of the Schmalkaldic League from February 7 to 26, 1537, Martin Luther stayed here as the guest of the Hessian rent master Balthasar Wilhelm.

A stucco plaque from 1687 with an inscription and the swan as a symbol of the reformer as well as his and Melanchthon's seal remind of this. The Luther House itself can only be visited as part of a guided tour of the city. The Martin Luther hiking trail (17 km), which leads to Tambach-Dietharz and follows Luther's journey from 1537, begins at the Lutherhaus.
