  • Framed by half-timbered houses characteristic of Schmalkalden, the Lutherhaus stands with its gable side facing the square of the same name (until 1837 Töpfmarkt) and its eaves facing the Schlossberg. During the most important meeting of the Schmalkaldic League from February 7 to 26, 1537, Martin Luther stayed here as the guest of the Hessian rent master Balthasar Wilhelm.

A stucco plaque from 1687 with an inscription and the swan as a symbol of the reformer as well as his and Melanchthon's seal remind of this. The Luther House itself can only be visited as part of a guided tour of the city. The Martin Luther hiking trail (17 km), which leads to Tambach-Dietharz and follows Luther's journey from 1537, begins at the Lutherhaus.
