The castle of Monschau was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century. In the middle of the 14th century, the complex was extended and enclosed by mighty ring walls and ramparts. This almost impregnable fortress of the Counts of Jülich was besieged by Emperor Charles V in 1543 with heavy artillery and finally captured, the city was sacked. The castle was only restored to expand the weather complex of the lower castle. The Frenchmen confiscated the castle as a national asset and sold it. However, the private owners were unable to maintain the extensive complex. They had the roofs demolished in 1836/37 in order to be freed from the tax on buildings. The castle quickly fell into ruins. It was not until the turn of the century that the province tried to stop the decline. The castle was secured, repaired and renovated. After the First World War, a youth hostel occupied the west wing. The castle of Monschau as a "youth castle" thus remains lively and inviting. Christo even packed it in 1971, and it is a highlight of Monschau when the castle and town are lit up. In summer, the inner courtyard of the castle becomes the atmospheric backdrop for the "Monschau Festival". Then the performances of renowned artists and renowned orchestras transform the fortress into a real Mecca for music fans. There is a youth hostel in the castle. Unfortunately, for this reason, the building cannot be visited. But a visit to the courtyard and the fantastic view of the city are also worth it!

In the Hellenthal region, you can explore a mix of medieval hilltop castles, some preserved as ruins and others largely intact. For example, Reifferscheid Castle offers impressive ruins with a climbable keep, while Wildenburg stands as the only undestroyed hilltop castle in the Euskirchen district, providing a more complete architectural experience.
Burg Reifferscheid, first documented in 1106, offers a deep dive into medieval history. You can explore its ruins, a well-preserved outer bailey, and a ring wall. The castle's history includes transformations, destruction, and rebuilding, reflecting centuries of change. The surrounding village has also maintained a nearly unchanged 600-year-old layout with half-timbered houses, adding to the historical atmosphere. Guided tours are available to provide deeper insights into its past.
Wildenburg is unique because it is the only undestroyed hilltop castle in the Euskirchen district. Mentioned as early as 1190, it retains its keep, castle dungeon, and a 16th-century gatehouse. Its romantic location on a steep mountain ridge offers picturesque views, and parts of the castle are still in use today as a church and a center for meetings and education.
Yes, several castles and nearby sites offer family-friendly experiences. For instance, Reifferscheid Castle allows visitors to climb its keep for free, offering panoramic views that children often enjoy. The Eifelspur circular hike, 'Auf den Spuren der Raubritter' (On the Trail of the Robber Knights), starting near Reifferscheid, is also a great family adventure. Additionally, Blankenheim's Historic Old Town is a pleasant place for families to stroll and explore.
The keep of Reifferscheid Castle offers excellent panoramic views of the surrounding Eifel landscape from its 470-meter height. Additionally, the View of Monschau and its castle provides a beautiful vantage point of the historic town and its castle, making it a popular spot for visitors.

The spring and summer months are generally ideal for visiting the castles, as the weather is pleasant for exploring the outdoor grounds and enjoying panoramic views. Autumn also offers beautiful scenery with changing foliage. If you're interested in specific events, consider visiting Reifferscheid Castle during its annual Christmas market in early December or its medieval festival in September (even years).
Beyond the castles, you can visit Blankenheim's Historic Old Town, where you can stroll through alleys with half-timbered houses and discover the Ahr spring. Another significant site is the Entrance gate to the Ordensburg Vogelsang, a complex that now houses a National Park Information Center and offers insights into its complex history.
Near Reifferscheid Castle, you can find "Café Burgliebe" below the castle in the Reinzelbach valley, which offers changing small dishes, homemade cakes, and other delicacies. The village of Reifferscheid itself, with its medieval charm, may also offer local establishments.

From Hellenthal, local buses or a short taxi ride might be necessary to reach the castle sites. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for the most current information.
Information on full accessibility for all castles is not explicitly detailed. However, some parts of castle grounds, especially outer bailey areas or surrounding villages, might be more accessible than climbing keeps or navigating ruins. For Reifferscheid Castle, while the ascent from the valley can be steep, there is a parking lot directly in front of the castle gate if approaching from Hönningen, which might offer easier access to the main grounds.
Visitors frequently appreciate the historical significance and the impressive views. The ruins of Reifferscheid Castle, for example, are praised for giving an idea of the complex's former size and power, with its accessible keep offering wonderful views of the North Eifel. The historic charm of the surrounding villages, like Reifferscheid and Blankenheim's Historic Old Town, with their half-timbered houses, is also a highlight.
