Ehrliche Beschreibungen – was war schön, was war hart, was hat überrascht. Keine hippen Weltenbummler-Stories, sondern echte Momente.

Paths that last – not the fastest, but the real ones.
More than 65 years old. Former competitive athlete. Today long-distance cyclist and trekker. I love trails, wilderness, and surprises – challenging, adventurous, unusual. But always real.
What you'll find here: Routes I've actually ridden. Honest descriptions. Practical info. No trendy stories, but real moments.

This turned into one of the toughest stages of the current tour 🚴‍♂️💨 And this time it had nothing to do with huge climbs or a particularly long distance.

The real fight started right after leaving the Interstate and turning onto UT-24. That was where the wind showed up. And not just a little headwind

Today was partly a really beautiful stage 🚴‍♂️🌄 Especially the first 20 km (12 mi) leaving Moab. Slightly away from US-191, a bike path winds through the rock landscape and made for a very relaxed start.

Saying goodbye to Moab turned out to be harder than I expected 😕 I could easily have stayed there

National Park Tour - Sightseeing Arches NP by my own

Today I went back into the park with a rental car, just like I had planned 🚗🌄 I really wanted to see the classic highlights too. And by the end of the day I can honestly say: this was a very special and unforgettable experience. As impressive as the Grand Canyon, just in a completely different way

National Park Tour - Sightseeing Arches NP Backcountry Tour

After arriving in Moab, the day still wasn’t over for me 🚴‍♂️ I had already booked a backcountry tour for late afternoon. I wanted to see more than just the main paved road through the park where most visitors go. I wanted to see the other side of Arches too.

We first drove through the Utah State Dinosaur

Today was simply a great stage 🚴‍♂️ And a fast one too. Large parts of the route were downhill, sometimes with grades up to 7%. That really brought some speed and led to those long fast descents that are just pure fun.

Of course it was not all easy. There were still some strong climbs in between. And

Today it was climbing time again 🚴‍♂️ I started at around 1300 m (4300 ft) and ended up back above 2200 m (7200 ft). But honestly, that has become pretty normal by now. I’m riding across a huge high plateau and it just keeps going up and down all the time. Anyone thinking it eventually gets flat up

Today somehow felt harder than expected 🚴‍♂️ And that was even though there really was not that much climbing. A few short but pretty steep sections up to 10%, but overall, that was about it.

The descents today were the real highlight 🚴‍♂️💨 Fast and often really long. Pure fun.

Today there was no bike ride for once 🚴‍♂️ Instead, I booked a guided tour through Monument Valley. I only let Komoot run for a very short section at the end, just to have a place for the photos. Because somehow this kind of sightseeing is still part of the trip too.

I took my time on this rather short tour. Started late and kept stopping for photos.

The road was great to ride on and had a good shoulder at the beginning. But that soon changed and the shoulder disappeared. So you have to share the lane with the tourists. Not always fun. In the end, almost at the destination

Today the climb somehow sneaked up on me 🚴‍♂️ From around 1300 meters (4300 ft) all the way up to more than 2100 meters (6900 ft) — slowly and almost without me noticing.

I had seen it during planning, but apparently I never really realized what it actually meant. All day I kept asking myself why everything

Today really felt like a day of contrasts 🚴‍♂️ From over 2300 m (7500 ft) down to around 1300 m (4300 ft). From cool mountain forests and unbelievable views back into the desert. From a pleasant 28°C with comfortable humidity back up to 35°C and that dry desert air again.

I simply couldn’t leave the Grand Canyon without running along the Rim at least once. So I rode my bike back into the park to have this one very special experience 🚴‍♂️

It was only five kilometers. Deliberately short, and almost always slightly downhill, so I wouldn’t put too much strain on myself. Besides

There is the well-developed path directly along the edge, but there are also proper trails leading down into the canyon. Many of them are difficult and need real preparation: enough water, food, suitable
