Mummelsee

Highlight • Lake

An old legend tells that in the past, nixies and dwarves, as well as a king, lived in the Mummelsee. On full moon nights, the nixies are said to have come to the Deckerhof in Seebach to do handicrafts, sing, and tell poems with the inhabitants.

Even today, the nixies visit village evenings. Of course, only in the company of their strict father, the Mummelsee King.

St. Michael's Chapel at the Mummelsee

Highlight • Religious Site

It was also in the 1920s when people thought of a chapel on Lake Mummelsee. At this time, services were held for staff and guests in a hall of the Mummelsee hotel on Sundays. But it wasn't until 1937 that the chapel next to the hotel, where the women's path to Hornisgrinde begins, was inaugurated. It was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. In the period after the Second World War, the flow of tourists on the Black Forest high road and especially on Mummelsee grew steadily. Many wanted to attend the regular 11 o'clock service in the chapel there on Sunday, and the small chapel was no longer enough. Pastor Kiehnle from the Mummelsee parish Seebach therefore initiated the construction of a larger chapel.
This project was carried out on the opposite side of the hotel in 1970/1971. Architect Franz Fuchs from Ottenhöfen had planned the new Michaelskapelle well into the landscape, modeled the Black Forest house with the low roof and stylized the Black Forest fir with the slender turret. The worshipers were now able to accommodate 120 seats and around 150 standing places. On Sunday around St. Michael’s Day (September 29), many Seebachers made a procession to the Mummelsee chapel to fulfill a promise at the end of the war. When Seebach was in great distress when the occupying forces entered.
The windows in the modern glass-concrete construction and the bronze cast artistic entrance door are remarkable about the new chapel. The church bell on the Black Forest High Road was taken over from the old chapel and is the former school bell of Seebach.

Mummelsee Gate, Seebach

Highlight • Structure

The Mummelsee Gate (or Portal) is one of 12 gates on the famous Westweg, the long-distance hiking trail through the Black Forest. You can also stamp your tour at this gate. The Black Forest Tourism Association issues a Westweg stamp card, which hikers or cyclists can then stamp on the card at all Westweg portals. Anyone who has collected at least 9 of the 12 different stamps can then pick up a Westweg scarf from the tourist information offices.

Tip: Starting the stage at Mummelsee and extending the previous stage is a good decision. The hotel may be expensive, but it was the cheapest, best and most plentiful snack on the Westweg for the day's hike.
