Rocky Cliffs and Caves

Highlight • Gorge

This superb ascent is in places carved, as stairs, directly into the rock. A physical climb but one that is worth every effort. Along the way, you can cool off in the various caves you will encounter.

Since the fog sometimes lasts quite a long time in the forest, the trees are covered with moss and lichen.

Refugio El Hornillo is a perfect place to regain strength for the climb to Tamadaba or after the descent. You can enjoy the most beautiful view from Plaza El Hornillo.

Molino de Abajo Ruins

Today only the ruins of the mill built around 1902 remain. Here, when the mill was still in operation, up to 1200 kilograms of grains of wheat, barley, etc. were produced per day.

Steep ascent, slower descent. It's exhausting but never dangerous and not technically difficult, so no rock climbing. A lot of loose rocks on the path so use good walking shoes. Start early because the walk took us 8 hours to complete. Also bring enough water. 2L is minimum on a sunny day in fall.
The entrance and the routes are well signposted, you should start the ascent in the morning if possible, as most of the time you walk in the blazing sun.
So take plenty of water with you
Please do not touch the cactus fruits, which are plentiful along the way, with your hand, it can be very uncomfortable.
This works very …

Very strenuous day tour with many different types of vegetation. In the first section, the trail is lined with almond trees and later you walk through pine forests. Endurance and sure-footedness are required for the descent. But you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the valley.

The Rother hiking guide from Gran Canaria only describes two tours as "TOP" AND "difficult" ("black"): trying out these two during my course vacation is naturally my priority. By chance I had booked two accommodations in the immediate vicinity with less than 15' drive.

Great tour but folks; please go the other way around Because the descent is just too slippery and too steep.

Very, very beautiful, challenging circular hiking trail from San Pedro (accessible by bus/car) into the Agaete valley towards El Hornillo (refreshments available) then a descent to the reservoir wall, cross it and back up into the pine forests of the Tamadaba. From there the passage between the rock walls leads down towards San Pedro.
