Hammer Lake

Highlight • Lake

The freshwater lake in front of you is the result of several storm surges that have plagued the island in the past. Due to the Petri flood in 1651, the island was divided into two parts. The breakthrough wasn't fully closed until 1928. But the dike created afterwards did not withstand the flood in 1932 and the water that reached the island behind it created the Hammersee. Today the lake no longer has any salinity. There is a hiking trail all around - also through the Juister wood with its gnarled trees.

Juist Wood

Highlight • Forest

"The elongated, narrow island is exposed to the constant wind, which does not allow extensive trees, such as on Norderney or Borkum. In the twenties of the century before last, the biologist Dr. Otto Leege began west of the Hammersee with the Planting particularly wind-hard plants and thus created the nature reserve that you can hike through on the approved paths.
As rare trees you can discover black alder and Carpathian birch in the grove. This small forest is something special, because the gnarled growth of the trees makes it look enchanted and ghostly. Especially when it is foggy you feel transported into the realm of legends and myths. The strong wind is the reason for this unique tree growth. You can find green and gray scales on many trees. These are lichens that have settled on the tree bark. It is precisely these lichens that are used as indicator plants for absolutely clean air. You will therefore find evidence of clean, low-pollutant air on Juist in our forest.
You can often spot deer on a hike through the grove. They have been living on our island for about 50 years. Hike or drive to the viewing platform in the woods. From there you not only have a beautiful view over the small, enchanted forest area, but also a view of the North Sea. A hike through the woods is a great alternative to a day at the beach, especially on warm days. "

This forest has cast a spell over us, it really creates an enchanted impression with its dense forest and cave-like alleyways.
If we are used to wandering between tall beeches and oaks, we will find bonsai oaks here (exaggerated), only the wind evacuators, which are somewhat taller, which have been combed diagonally by the storm and constant wind.

One last round and a farewell. Before breakfast, through the dunes and towards the Hammersee to circle it. Past the island school, which looks after all children up to 10th grade, it continues over field paths, where the pupils come towards me on foot or by bike. At the edge in the dunes, you can see deer, pheasants and hares, …

Today, Komoot was acting up. There aren't any 330 meters of elevation gain on Juist. 😂 I guess it's 30 meters instead. Besides, it took about 3 hours to record and covered about 12.7 km. Since I also wear a smartwatch, I can determine it with a fair degree of certainty.

Today's tour took us to Hammersee, an inland lake that was created by storm surge in 1932 and is increasingly silting up. A beautiful circular path leads around this bird paradise, but you can only see it from one point on the south bank. On the way back from Loog we got pretty rainy.
