Reynaert Monument, Hulst

Highlight • Monument

The story about the cunning fox Reynaert is a satirical animal story, in which medieval society is held up to a mirror. It is one of the earliest works written in the vernacular. In the story, places in the vicinity of Hulst are recognizable. The city therefore calls itself the Reynaert city.

Oranjebolwerk

Highlight • Historical Site

It served to protect the Ghent Gate, the then ravelin and the harbour. Between 1906 and 1955 there was a gas factory. Due to a lack of space, the municipality excavated the stronghold down to the central square in 1926 and filled in the inner fortress to expand the gas factory. That expansion did not happen. In the 20th century, the stronghold also housed a sheltered workshop, a fire station, a slaughterhouse and a lemonade factory. At the end of the 20th century, the wall along the stronghold was raised again and the adjacent fortress was excavated up to the station road to create a parking lot and a connecting road with a bridge.

Nassaubolwerk

Highlight • Historical Site

The Nassaubolwerk (formerly called the St. Franciscusbolwerk, after the then nearby Minderbroederklooster on 's-Gravenhofplein) is one of the smallest of the nine strongholds. On the other side of the canal, the remains of a ravelin and the counterscarp were turned into a walking park and later a parking lot.

Keldermanspoort (Bollewerckpoort)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bollewerckpoorte or Dobbele Poort, also known colloquially as Keldermanspoort, is the western entrance to the city. It is located in the 3.5 km long city wall and was both a land and water gate. During the invasion by the people of Ghent in 1491, the gate was destroyed and then reinforced again. However, during the Eighty Years' War, the gate had to give way again. In 1618, the ruin was buried under earth from the new Brederode bastion and became invisible. Mr Keldermans (?) conducted research and discovered the buried gate. From 1959, excavations and restorations took place under the leadership of P.J. Brand. In 1999, the Keldermanspoort was restored to its current state.

Since 2012, the Keldermanspoort has been reconnected to the city center of Hulst through the Nieuwe Bierkaai project by the redevelopment of the old inner harbor. On top of the Brederode bastion, there is a viewing panel, which allows you to see what the gate must have looked like in former times.

City Mill

Highlight • Monument

The Stadsmolen is a very beautiful, several times restored, round stone tower mill with an upper porter. It is located on the Molenbolwerk.
There used to be a mill here centuries ago. The current mill was built in 1792. This was done by order of the national government to serve the soldiers who were housed in the city. The coat of arms of the States General in The Hague is bricked in above the entrance doors. It is a so-called scaffolding mill. It is built with yellow IJssel stones. The rack is eight meters high. Above that the blades with a flight of 26 meters in diameter. After 1800 the mill passed into private hands. The municipality of Hulst bought the mill in 1954. Today the mill is drained by a volunteer miller.

The height of the scaffolding (circulation) is eight metres.
The flight (the length of the blades) is 24.26 meters.
The mill has two couplers.
The mill was in operation until the 1930s, albeit with a gas engine in recent years.

After 1940, the mill fell into serious disrepair. The position was demolished in 1944. To make matters worse, in 1954 lightning struck and a fire broke out.

Thanks to the efforts of the then municipal council, the mill was restored in 1956. As a result, the mill was externally restored to its former glory and was given the name Stadsmolen. After all, it belonged to the city.

In 1976, the city council decided to have the mill, which had revealed only serious defects, restored. This restoration was completed in 1979. Since 1984, annual maintenance has been carried out on the Stadsmolen. Restoration work was carried out again in 1992.

This Stone artwork creates an image of Reynaert de Vos and six ducks, each made of a boulder with a head and legs. The whole stands on a kind of marble table, with the text "If the fox preaches passion…" on both sides.
A similar statue by the same artist can be found in the Oudemanskreek in Sint-Laureins (Belgium).
