It served to protect the Ghent Gate, the then ravelin and the harbour. Between 1906 and 1955 there was a gas factory. Due to a lack of space, the municipality excavated the stronghold down to the central square in 1926 and filled in the inner fortress to expand the gas factory. That expansion did not happen. In the 20th century, the stronghold also housed a sheltered workshop, a fire station, a slaughterhouse and a lemonade factory. At the end of the 20th century, the wall along the stronghold was raised again and the adjacent fortress was excavated up to the station road to create a parking lot and a connecting road with a bridge.
