Cathedral of San Nicolò (Noto)

Highlight • Religious Site

The cathedral of San Nicolò di Mira, dedicated and venerated as the mother church until 1844, stands majestically on the Piazza Municipio of Noto. This architectural monument, built in the 19th century based on a design by the architect Bernardo Labisi, stands out for its elegant fusion of baroque and classical elements. The façade, which soberly dominates the beautiful square, features eight Corinthian columns, a bronze portal decorated with the city coat of arms and sculptures depicting episodes from the life of San Corrado Confalonieri. The two towers on the sides of the central body, one a bell tower and the other with a clock, are flanked by statues of the Evangelists. The building has a history that begins after the earthquake of 1693, with the construction of a brick church opened for worship in 1703. Over the centuries, it has suffered various vicissitudes, including the collapse of the dome in 1848 and a disastrous accident in 1996. However, thanks to meticulous reconstruction and restoration work, the cathedral was reopened for worship on 18 June 2007.

Shortly before Syracuse there is another section of the EV7 to Pozallo. We followed this today from Syracuse to Noto. The route led us on pleasant back roads mainly through agricultural area. We were lucky with the weather - it always looked like rain, but it stayed dry.

Beautiful quite quiet route with a small blemish. On the way back, crossing the drawbridge was only possible directly over the sliding bed.
