The cathedral of San Nicolò di Mira, dedicated and venerated as the mother church until 1844, stands majestically on the Piazza Municipio of Noto. This architectural monument, built in the 19th century based on a design by the architect Bernardo Labisi, stands out for its elegant fusion of baroque and classical elements. The façade, which soberly dominates the beautiful square, features eight Corinthian columns, a bronze portal decorated with the city coat of arms and sculptures depicting episodes from the life of San Corrado Confalonieri. The two towers on the sides of the central body, one a bell tower and the other with a clock, are flanked by statues of the Evangelists. The building has a history that begins after the earthquake of 1693, with the construction of a brick church opened for worship in 1703. Over the centuries, it has suffered various vicissitudes, including the collapse of the dome in 1848 and a disastrous accident in 1996. However, thanks to meticulous reconstruction and restoration work, the cathedral was reopened for worship on 18 June 2007.

The Cathedral of San Nicolò in Noto is the cathedral of the Diocese of Noto, founded in 1844 in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily. It was built after the earthquake of 1693 at the new location of the city from 1694 to 1703 as the main parish church (Chiesa Madre) of Noto. In the 18th century the church was enlarged and the facade was completed in the Sicilian Baroque style by Rosario Gagliardi by 1770. It has had the title of a minor basilica since 2012 and is part of the World Heritage Site of the Late Baroque Cities of Val di Noto (Wikipedia).
