Canal du Rhône au Rhin

Highlight • Cycleway

This section runs alongside the Rhine-Rhône Canal and is part of the EuroVelo 6 route. The canal's lively atmosphere is delightful. The cycle path is well-maintained and the setting is very pleasant.

Every time I stop at Eurovelo Route 6 in Dole, I enjoy the view of the city's landmark from the canal. Notre-Dame from the 16th century with its 75 m high tower.

The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame in Dole dominates the old town with its majestic bell tower, remarkable stained-glass windows, and rich historical and religious heritage. It is a true Gothic gem dating back to the Renaissance.

View of Dole and Saint-Jean Church

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here, the view of Dole is a real postcard. This peaceful path runs along the canal and offers bucolic panoramas of the calm waters, with Dole and its Saint-Jean church in the spotlight.

The Saône

Highlight • River

Lovely paved trail along the river. Part of the EuroVelo 6 from the Atlantic to the Black Sea, and also continues along the river all the way down to the Mediterranean

Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Jean-de-Losne lies at the junction of three major waterways: the Saône River, which flows towards the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea; the Burgundy Canal, which flows towards the Seine and the Paris Basin; and the Rhine-Rhône Canal, which flows towards the Rhine and Northern and Eastern Europe.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the smallest municipalities in France: a total of 0.60 km², of which 0.36 km² is land and the rest water.

Nice car-free path along the Saône

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Great section of the EuroVélo 6 bike trail along the Saône, where the canal can simply use the bed of the natural river.

Verdun-Ciel

Highlight • Settlement

Pleasant town at the confluence of the two rivers Doubs and Saône, with a lively farmers market on the central square on Thursdays. The canal du Rhône au Rhin, which follows the Doubs from the Rhine river, already leaves the Doubs a long way earlier and joins the larger Saône some 40 km upstream from here. Likewise, from Saint-Jean-de-Losne to the South the trail follows the canal along the much wider stream of the Saône. The EuroVelo 6 route crosses much larger bridges when weaving between the left and right banks from here on south.

At the campsite I met Tobias from Freiburg, who is travelling with his self-built bicycle caravan. The caravan is very sophisticated. I was quite jealous of it when it came to the overnight stay and the start in the morning.

It's always very cold in the tent in the morning, but my sleeping bag keeps me nice and warm. Nevertheless, camping in these current conditions is anything but pleasant. It's a challenge to get wet or damp clothes dry.
Nevertheless, we're heading for another camp today. The route is great and, as always, beautifully green through the countryside. It's cold, …
