Saint-Jean-de-Losne lies at the junction of three major waterways: the Saône River, which flows towards the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea; the Burgundy Canal, which flows towards the Seine and the Paris Basin; and the Rhine-Rhône Canal, which flows towards the Rhine and Northern and Eastern Europe.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the smallest municipalities in France: a total of 0.60 km², of which 0.36 km² is land and the rest water.

It's worth to leave the EuroVeloRoute 6 here briefly to cross the bridge to the northern side of the Saône river and explore this little town, with a great museum about the canal boat history, and a small harbor further inlands that once served the smaller old canal boats and now tries to reinvent itself for the pleasure boats using the canal. The wide bridge had to be rebuilt after the Second World War, as the retreating German Wehrmacht on September 4, 1944 blew up the strategic crossing over the Saône. Previously, the Royal Air Force had bombed and destroyed the bridge in Seurre, interrupting important west-east connections over the Saône river.
