In Medicean era fortresses, castles, towers and outposts became very frequent in the territory of Livorno.
Between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, Livorno's defense was entrusted to both the powerful system of fortifications built in the city (the Fosso Reale, the Fortezza Nuova and the Fortezza Vecchia) and a series of sight towers and military outposts along the coast south of the castle of Antignano: the towers of the Devil (current Boccale), Calafuria and San Salvatore (current castle Sonnino).
The presence of three towers was necessary, given the particularly jagged nature of the coast, in order to be able to see the adjacent tower and transmit,by means of torches and lighting fires, any alert signals of warning to the city, at a time when the attacks of barbaresque and Turkish pirates were very frequent.

Calafuria Cliffs

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

The stretch of coast of Calafuria is characterized by the fusion of two different environments also in colour: high up, on the hills leading towards the Castellaccio, the green of the Mediterranean maquis of the Calafuria Nature Reserve dominates unchallenged, free from marked anthropization; below, beyond the ex-Aurelia, the intense blue of the sea dominates, in which, on clear days, you can see in the distance the islands of Gorgona, Capraia, sometimes even Corsica, and the island of Elba with Piombino promontory
Immediately before the Calafuria bridge is the homonymous tower built in the Medici era for the purpose of sighting Barbary raids. Now under restoration and cannot be visited
In the same area, up to the Calignaia bridge, there are frequent sandstone cliffs in which quadrangular spaces of various sizes were cut out in ancient times (Etruscan and Roman), probably used as stone quarries, which the sea filled in, making to become the larger pools of real swimming pools (perhaps the locality is precisely the one that the Tabula Peutingeriana reports as "ad piscinas"); here, thanks to the low level and tepid temperature of the water, it is common to see children bathing in the good season.

Barriera Margherita, Livorno

Highlight • Monument

Barriera Margherita (customs barrier) is one of the few surviving Barriers of the city.
Designed by Adriano Unis, it dates back to the 1890 expansion and received this name in honor of Queen Margherita, wife of the King of Italy Umberto I.
Located along the promenade, in front of the Naval Academy, it marked the southernmost boundary of the toll-gates of the city and is characterized by two elegant symmetrical structures, consisting of a stone portico and separated by the wide Viale Italia; access was regulated by a large gate between the two buildings.
The Margherita Barrier fulfilled its function until 1912, when the walls were partially demolished. But from the 1930s to the 1960s the eastern building hosted the arrival terminus of the Livorno - Tirrenia - Pisa railway. Today it houses a nursery school.

Palazzo Caprilli (Livorno)

Highlight • Monument

The imposing Palazzo Caprilli is located on the seafront of Livorno, at the intersection of Viale Italia and Via dei Funaioli.
It was built in the mid-19th century on behalf of Domenico Caprilli who divided it into furnished apartments to rent in the summer season. In 1870 the palace was owned by Enrico and Olinto Caprilli who sold part of it to the Rignano family who over time acquired it completely.
The structure of the building, which is large but not heavy, extends in length for a hundred meters, facing the gardens of the Mascagni terrace; in height it is divided into three parts separated by showy string courses: on the ground floor covered with smooth ashlar, there are various vaulted doors that lead to the internal homes or commercial premises; the middle part actually consists of two floors, both characterized by a regular row of large windows each delimited by pilasters or Corinthian columns as high as the two floors together; in the center of the facade a long balcony with small columns protrudes, two other smaller ones on the sides; the upper part finally presents a series of doors and windows enclosed by a simpler continuous wrought iron railing. All this, together with a bright color, gilded by the sun's rays especially at sunset, gives elegance and lightness to the building.

The Casini di Ardenza

Highlight • Historical Site

Casini di Ardenza: overlook the scenic seafront of Livorno, along Viale Italia. In the 19th century Livorno became a famous summer destination sought after by the national and international bourgeoisie, particularly the English. The first bathing establishments in Italy were built right here, the building hosted wealthy tourists of various nationalities (mostly English) and was also inhabited by the Grand Duke Leopold II and his court; therefore they are also called Casini Granducali.
It was designed (and completed in 1845) in the neoclassical style then in vogue in Livorno by the architect Giuseppe Cappellini, famous above all for having designed the Goldoni Theater in Livorno. The Casini (which means stately country residence intended for leisure) are made up of 13 buildings united in a single building (for a total of 322 rooms) arranged in the shape of an omega flanked by two lateral wings and overlooking the promenade love. The main facade is characterized by a large pediment and Ionic columns, and the lateral structures show a portico with elegant Tuscan-style sandstone columns. The complex included a ballroom, a restaurant, gaming and billiard rooms, stables and an English park at the back.

It will not be the case to bring up the technological singularity or the dystopian projections of science fiction, but if the real data (45.9 km in 2h: 07 ') have been heavily distorted, there will also be an explanation!
I don't know if it is the fault of the GPS, the App, the smartphone (perhaps overheated) or some of …

Well, it's not for everyone to have a Moai as a protector!
As for the ride, covered on a day that would be an understatement to define as spring-like (18°, moreover with no wind), Komoot took care of reducing it: I had pedaled it at a decent average (23.9 km/h, now unusual for me), but then I forgot to save …

Doctor's appointment in Cecina. The usual boring route (I've stopped counting them). A light rain begins to fall. The dark clouds don't bode well. Seventy kilometers is a long way. Maybe it's full of trucks... What do I do, take the car? But NO! I wave my umbrella skyward and off I go.
Result: few cars and very few trucks …

I will have traveled the Livorno-Cecina section dozens and dozens of times by now.
Running along the cycle path along the coast, the sea, the pines, the holm oaks, the olive trees, the sunflower fields and the predominantly blue sky are the dominant note of the landscape; on the other hand, the lack of reliefs (except for the modest brow …
