Barriera Margherita (customs barrier) is one of the few surviving Barriers of the city.
Designed by Adriano Unis, it dates back to the 1890 expansion and received this name in honor of Queen Margherita, wife of the King of Italy Umberto I.
Located along the promenade, in front of the Naval Academy, it marked the southernmost boundary of the toll-gates of the city and is characterized by two elegant symmetrical structures, consisting of a stone portico and separated by the wide Viale Italia; access was regulated by a large gate between the two buildings.
The Margherita Barrier fulfilled its function until 1912, when the walls were partially demolished. But from the 1930s to the 1960s the eastern building hosted the arrival terminus of the Livorno - Tirrenia - Pisa railway. Today it houses a nursery school.
