Alcock and Brown Landing Site

This is where John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown landed in 1919 after their first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. It took them 16 hours and 12 minutes to get here from Newfoundland. You can find out more about their history on informative boards. In addition, one of the first commercial stations for the transmission of radio messages is located here.

Marconi Wireless Station Site at Lough Emlaghnabehy

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1901 Guglielmo Marconi transmitted a wireless message from Poldhu in Cornwall to Newfoundland. This was a huge achievement and heralded the dawn of a completely new way of communicating. Marconi found it difficult to establish profitable communications between Poldu and Canada so moved his wireless station as far west as he could, here next to Lough Emlaghnabehy.It was partially burnt down in 1922 and closed down. There are information boards at the site which give further details of its history.

Marconi Railway Line and Lough Emlaghnabehy

The Marconi Railway ran from the R341 for 2.4km around the eastern edge of Lough Emlaghnabehy and to the Marconi Wireless Station. It was originally built to carry building material while the station was being constructed but in time was used to transport visitors and staff. It was in use from 1907 to 1922. The path of the railway is now known as Marconi Street and makes for a wide trail to hike up to the Lough.
