In 1901 Guglielmo Marconi transmitted a wireless message from Poldhu in Cornwall to Newfoundland. This was a huge achievement and heralded the dawn of a completely new way of communicating. Marconi found it difficult to establish profitable communications between Poldu and Canada so moved his wireless station as far west as he could, here next to Lough Emlaghnabehy. It was partially burnt down in 1922 and closed down. There are information boards at the site which give further details of its history.
