This old railway line is very easy to ride.

This bridge is truly a force to be reckoned with and a masterpiece of its time. I was really surprised when I drove over this bridge.

Kastl is THE hub and key point for cyclists travelling between the districts of Neumarkt and Amberg Sulzbach. The market town not only separates the upper reaches of the Lauterach from the middle river valley, it also offers cyclists connections in all directions. And on top of that, a wide range of restaurants are served here.

The town hall, which the penultimate Benedictine abbot, Johannes Menger, had built in 1552 at the monastery's expense, is a building that has been modified many times. In 1890 it was given a second floor and later a stepped gable, which is crowned by a graceful turret. A bell used to hang in this tower, which reminded citizens of their most important duty on election days. Above the main entrance to the town hall is a sandstone relief with the coats of arms of the Electorate of the Palatinate and the Kastl Abbey. To the left of the entrance there used to be a pillory stone with a collar above it that protruded from the wall. The condemned were locked in this. Here the sinners who had committed a crime with their blasphemy, with thieving hands or in some other way had to stand in the pillory for several hours. The stone is still preserved, the collar was removed in the 1950s. To the right of the entrance the market fountain provided fresh water for the residents of the market square. It was a popular meeting place and a source of the most important news. Until 1963, the town hall housed three elementary school classrooms. Here you can find a large money chest with lots of iron fittings (unfortunately without gold ducats). Hoi Bridge The most impressive structure on the entire Amberg – Lauterhofen railway line is certainly the five-arched Hoi Bridge, a masterpiece of railway engineering at the time. It was built in 1902/03, mainly by Italian and Croatian construction workers. The bridge is 82 meters long, 3.70 meters wide, 18 meters high and has four pillars made of local stone. It was renovated in 1995/1996 and since then a cycle path and a cross-country ski trail have run over it in winter. The renovated bridge is the pearl of the Schweppermann cycle path.
