11월 29, 2025, Cima della Caldiera
Climbing this peak in winter is a small undertaking, as reaching it involves a 25- to 30-kilometer round trip and about 1,000 meters of elevation gain, starting from Campomulo (Gallio cross-country skiing center). Once you've conquered it, however, it fills your heart and mind.

Spectacular views in every direction. The numerous remains of the Great War buildings and the suffering of the soldiers who lived there for years are a source of reflection.

Starting from Malga Galmarara, at a good pace, you can reach the summit in about 2 hours and 10 minutes. The route presents no real difficulties, except for the last, rather steep section and a descent where you need to be careful to avoid slipping on the rocks. There are two summit books where you can leave a message.

The summit is easily reachable with good training, the path is never dangerous or exposed, if you continue the tour towards Cima Larici you must pay close attention to the steep descent

Cima della Caldiera is one of the highest peaks of the Asiago plateau 2124 meters. It has an important view of the entire plateau but also of the other surrounding peaks starting from Ortigara, peak 12, Portule; as well as of Valsugana, peak d'Asta and the Pale di San Martino. It is known for the war events of the Great War: from here the attack on the Austrian positions on Ortigara started.

Spectacular labyrinth, worth a visit and I assure you it will remain etched in your mind. A succession of ups and downs, narrow walls, passages between narrow rocks, panoramic points, ladders. I think one of the most beautiful labyrinth routes in the area 😍🤩

Altitude 2124 and crazy 360° view. To climb to the top it takes a few minutes and good balance.

The route from Malga Galmarara is feasible. Some points are more difficult and you need to be careful, but it is a very pleasant excursion, especially in good weather. Unfortunately, when I reached the top, I found fog so I was unable to photograph the Valsugana village, but it was a difficult and sweaty experience. 👍

The characteristic "rock labyrinth" makes this one of the most particular places of the Altopiano dei 7 Comuni. The interest is of a geological type for the rock formations of the Lower Pleistocene; of a faunal and floristic type due to the presence of protected and particular animals and vegetation; and historical due to the presence of tunnels, stairs and walkways dating back to the First World War during the Stafexpedition.

Mount Portule ('Pòrtel' in Cimbrian or 'Kempel' in German) is a long, massive ridge stretching toward the Valsugana Valley: its elongated, austere, barren, and sharp profile is unmistakable and easily recognizable even from very distant peaks. At 2,308 meters, it is the third highest peak on the Asiago Plateau, after Cima XII and Monte Trentin. Thanks to its height, position, and shape, the 360° panorama from the summit is breathtaking: to the north, the Valsugana Valley, the Lagorai mountains, and the Dolomites; to the east, the Vicenza Prealps, Folgaria, and Becco di Filadonna; to the south, the entire Asiago Plateau; on clear days, you can even see the Venice Lagoon. On the western side, a steep and strenuous trail climbs rapidly from Cima Larici; To the south, a picturesque trail, known as the 'Filon,' runs along the long ridge to Bocchetta Portule. Owing to its dominant and central position, it was a contested peak during the Great War: initially in Italian hands, it was conquered by the Austro-Hungarians with the Strafexpedition of May 1916. The remains of three cableways are visible on the summit; at Bocchetta Portule, a gun emplacement is located in a cave to block passage from the Val d'Assa. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cima_Portule

3월 24, 2023, Monte Ortigara Memorial
Scene of one of the most dramatic and bloody episodes of the Great War: between June 10 and 29, 1917, thousands of Italian soldiers were hurled en masse to conquer Mount Ortigara, from the steep eastern slope, toward certain death. The Austro-Hungarians, in a clearly favorable position, decimated the attackers with machine guns, gas, and flamethrowers. A needless massacre of 28,000 Italian soldiers and 9,000 Imperial soldiers. Since those tragic events, the mountain has been nicknamed "the Calvary of the Alpine Troops." The first National Alpine Rally took place here in 1920. In 1967, the entire area was recognized as a "Sacred Zone to the Fatherland," for the futile sacrifice made and as a lasting reminder "not to forget." https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Ortigara https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battaglia_del_monte_Ortigara

3월 24, 2023, Cima Dodici Summit
Cima Dodici (also known as Cima XII), between Portule and Ortigara, is the highest peak on the Asiago Plateau, as well as in the entire province of Vicenza: 2,336 meters. It is divided between Veneto and Trentino, hence the two crosses on the summit: a wooden one in Veneto and a metal one in Trentino. On the Plateau, more in the past than today, this peak was also called 'Ferrozzo' (an Italianization of the Cimbrian 'Freyjoch', meaning 'Yoke of Freya'), because the Cimbrians dedicated it to the Germanic goddess Freya. The toponym 'Cima Dodici', which is now the most widespread and official, was given to it by the inhabitants of Borgo Valsugana: in fact, at certain times of the year, it casts shadow over the town at precisely 12 o'clock. Together with the nearby Cima Undici and Cima Dieci (which similarly indicate the time based on the position of the sun behind them), it forms a sort of 'natural sundial'. It is precisely for this reason that the three peaks are often written on maps and texts as XII, XI, X... like on a clock! A long and challenging road, through a striking and rugged karst landscape, especially in the final stretch where you climb the rocks: at the top, a breathtaking 360° view, with the sheer drop of the Valsugana beneath your feet! https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cima_XII

Cima Caldiera's former name was Monte Toro, a corruption of the ancient Cimbrian toponym Thor, a Scandinavian deity to whom the mountain was dedicated. During the Great War, it was an important stronghold and observation point for the Italian army, overlooking Mount Ortigara, which was held by the Austro-Hungarians. Evidence of this is a network of trenches extending to the foot of Mount Ortigara, and on the opposite side of the mountain, barracks and cave shelters providing protection from enemies. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cima_della_Caldiera

A stunning and adventurous natural labyrinth, shaped over millions of years by the action of water on the karst rock, creating caves, tunnels, crevices, passages, and canyons! It is a veritable "natural castle," with rooms, corridors, and secret passages, perched atop a hill along the edge of the Valsugana valley: hence the name "Castelloni"; "San Marco" because it is close to the former border between the Republic of San Marco (Venice) and the Habsburg Empire. During World War I, given its proximity to the Ortigara front, it was adapted by Italian soldiers as a second line of defense and observation post. Spectacular views of the Valsugana valley and the Lagorai mountains are offered. The trail is well marked with progressive numbers from 1 to 48: we recommend following them for a complete visit and to avoid getting lost, avoiding dangerous off-piste routes over the precipice. Caution and caution: the rock can be slippery when wet and humid.

It's not easy to get up to here, nothing dangerous but just a little difference in altitude. But once you get there, the effort is rewarded with a wonderful view.
