During World War I, military communications were conducted via telephone and telegraph, linked by kilometers of underground cables. Fearing that bombing raids could easily cut them, the Austro-Hungarian army adopted alternative systems such as carrier pigeons and light signals. Optical signals, in particular, found widespread use in communications between forts: this dedicated station was set up on the summit of Monte Rust, a modest elevation (1,280 meters) but strategically located centrally with respect to the empire's fortifications: Vezzena, Busa Verle, Cherle, Luserna, Belvedere, Sommo Alto, and Dosso delle Somme. It was also set back and therefore protected from the front line. Today, the skeleton of the building remains, and can be visited freely, including the gallery.
