Most of the town of Wolgast lies on the mainland, but a small part is on the island of Usedom. The impressive Peene Bridge makes for a wonderful stroll from one bank to the other, offering fantastic views.

Beautiful church with a small park

Its name probably comes from the time when its water was still used to brew beer in the Eldena monastery complex

The remains of the once important monastery are embedded in a park with old trees, including 180-year-old oaks. The main accent of the ruins is the imposing west façade of the former monastery church with the high pointed arch window opening. Caspar David Friedrich painted many pictures of the ruins and thereby sparked a new appreciation, which enabled the complex to be preserved and secured in 1830.

The Eldena monastery ruins were redesigned for Caspar David Friedrich's 250th birthday. Several steles were erected to provide information about the monastery's eventful history. Several benches and new plantings now make the visit even more pleasant. The monastery ruins fascinated Caspar David Friedrich and inspired him to create numerous paintings and sketches. Anyone who enters the complex understands this: an atmospheric, romantic atmosphere emanates from the monastery ruins. An impressive photo opportunity, especially at dusk or in the fog. Alongside the cathedral, the town hall square and the Wieck bascule bridge, it is one of Greifswald's landmarks!

Very easy to navigate section, lots of nature

From the Wolgast museum harbor you have a great view of the Peene Bridge. Here you can marvel at the bridges opening and closing every day. Bridge opening times: •05:45 a.m. •08:45 a.m. •12:45 p.m. •05:45 p.m. •08:45 p.m.

With his four copperplate engravings: Morning, Evening, Day, Night, Runge was the first painter to set the program for the new art of Romanticism in Germany. Inspired by holistic ideas, Runge also devoted himself to the theory of colors, designed playing cards and wrote down Pomeranian fairy tales such as "Vom Fischer un sin Fru", which found its way into Grimm's fairy tales. In the exhibition, which was redesigned in 2017, you can get an interactive insight into the artist's world. In Kronwiekstrasse, not far from the harbor, is the birthplace of Philipp-Otto Runge (1777 - 1810). The house and the picturesque courtyard are open for the annual culture night in August. Music and theater invite visitors to get to know the romantic side of the city of Wolgast. In the living room gallery, the Rungehaus offers changing exhibitions by selected artists.
