Beautiful church with a small park

Its name probably comes from the time when its water was still used to brew beer in the Eldena monastery complex

The remains of the once important monastery are embedded in a park with old trees, including 180-year-old oaks. The main accent of the ruins is the imposing west façade of the former monastery church with the high pointed arch window opening. Caspar David Friedrich painted many pictures of the ruins and thereby sparked a new appreciation, which enabled the complex to be preserved and secured in 1830.

The Eldena monastery ruins were redesigned for Caspar David Friedrich's 250th birthday. Several steles were erected to provide information about the monastery's eventful history. Several benches and new plantings now make the visit even more pleasant. The monastery ruins fascinated Caspar David Friedrich and inspired him to create numerous paintings and sketches. Anyone who enters the complex understands this: an atmospheric, romantic atmosphere emanates from the monastery ruins. An impressive photo opportunity, especially at dusk or in the fog. Alongside the cathedral, the town hall square and the Wieck bascule bridge, it is one of Greifswald's landmarks!

The Bierbach is a stream in the Eldena nature reserve. It was drained just behind the Rehbruch forest area and only flows through the Hohen Graben. Its name comes from the time when there was still a brewery in Eldena. The water needed for this was taken from the Koitenhäger Bach, which over time was given the name "Bierbach".

The church was built around 1300 under the patronage of the Eldena monastery and was badly destroyed several times. The church received its current shape around 1750.

Pollarded willows have been around for many centuries. As willow trees are very prone to drifting, which is due to their often difficult location in river and stream floodplains, they were "cultivated" early on to obtain building and fuel material, as well as for fodder. The branches are cut every year or two. The rods were used to build fences ("garden" comes from the word "rod") and of course for basket weaving. An inexpensive and very sustainable natural material. The brushwood could heat the ovens and the leaves could be fed fresh or dried to goats, sheep and horses. It's a shame that this is only done very rarely anymore, because it would mean that the pollarded willows could be cared for better again. Today the material is piled up to rot. Burning is nonsense these days.
