The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Billerbeck was probably built as a single-nave church in the 8th century. The parish church was built to strengthen the diocese of Münster. It is to be seen in connection with the other episcopal chaplaincies of Beckum, Stadtlohn and Warendorf, as they all had a canon each. On March 26, 809, on the day of his death, St. Liudger held his last holy mass in what was then the Billerbeck church.
