The small Saale is a tributary of the Saale and was diverted to the monastery grounds by the Schulpforta monks to use hydroelectric power.

The water needed to drive the waterworks in Bad Kösen and diverted from the Saale was created as an artificial canal called the "Kleine Saale" (5 km long to the Schulpforte monastery) by the Cistercian monks to drive their water mill there. The water still rushes into the pond very powerfully today, unhindered, as the mill wheel is missing.
