The fountain tells the legend of the foundation of the monastery in Waldsassen: Margrave Diepold III. During a hunt in 1127, he met monks who, without his permission, had settled in Köllergrün on Schirndinger Strasse (ie in the forest - Waldsassen). It turned out that one of these monks was the noble Gerwig von Wolmundstein, once best friend of the Margrave, who believed that he had fatally injured Diepold in a jousting tournament in which they faced each other unrecognized. Out of joy at this unexpected reunion, the Margrave Gerwig and his brothers donated the land, which could be ridden on a donkey sitting in one day. The border was marked in nature as a ditch and is still called "donkey trench".
