The Große Laache near Pulheim - since 1999, together with the northern Orrer Forest, specially protected as a nature reserve - is the relic of an old loop of the Rhine and today represents the natural estuary of the Pulheimer Bach, which seeps into well-drained soil layers as it crosses the lower terrace of the Old Rhine.
