The town church is dedicated to John the Baptist and has been a Protestant parish church since 1522 due to the introduction of the Reformation. At the end of the Second World War, Crailsheim was more than 80% destroyed. Fortunately, the Johanneskirche survived the destruction of the city and was only slightly damaged. In addition to the winged altar by Wohlgemut, the sacrament house from 1499 and the baroque grave monuments in the choir, as well as the baroque organ front, are worth seeing. Since 2018, the church also has several modern glass works of art by Ada Isensee.

The Johanneskirche is without a doubt the most important building in the city in terms of art history. The present building dates from the years 1398-1440. It stands on what is now the church square on a historic site, as there was a Franconian cemetery with rows of graves as early as the 7th century. Two previous stone buildings (around 1000 and around 1250) have been proven by excavations.

Of the numerous works of art in the church, the top-class winged altar in the choir room deserves special mention. Of particular quality are the panel paintings of the altar, which show scenes from the Passion of Jesus on the front and stations from the life of John the Baptist on the back. They were created in the 1490s in the famous workshop of the Nuremberg art entrepreneur Michael Wolgemut. Albrecht Dürer received his training there and some art historians assume that he was involved in the Crailsheim Altarpiece.
