Moel-y-Gest Summit

Hiking

5.0

(42)

Porthmadog’s estuary is an extraordinary place with vast sand banks, the fascinating village of Portmeirion and wonderful views of Snowdonia. If you want the best view of it, it’s time to head up Moel-Y-Gest. This fantastically-placed hill rises to 860 feet (262 m) and forms a ridge running east to west, with a stone-walled hillfort at the summit.

You can start your ascent from the south or the north, although the south is usually easier from a path-finding perspective. The terrain is heather-strewn moorland lower down and increasingly rocky as you ascend. The summit ridge is littered with boulders, brilliant picnic spots on a sunny day.

Clear weather brings epic views across the estuary, south along the Welsh coastline and east into the towering western edge of Snowdonia. The surroundings are beautiful and covered in footpaths, so it’s easy to add Moel-Y-Gest into a longer hike. You can walk into Porthmadog afterwards (and, indeed, start there), to find something to eat.

    Hiking

Moel-y-Gest is a great little hill with super good views towards the Snowdonia range and down the length of the Llŷn Peninsula. It has a nice nice rocky top and a very imposing, well kept stone trig pointed summit.
