Hiking trails up Moel Hebog at once lift you above beautiful Beddgelert and provide outstanding views of Snowdon and her majestic national park. This commanding mountain is craggy and breathtaking when viewed from the village, an almost intimidating sight. With its sister peaks of Moel yr Ogof and Moel Lefn, you can expand your hike into a grand, all day affair or keep it short and steep with Hebog only.

Legends, llyns and luxurious views

Many hikers begin from Beddgelert village from where you can ascend directly to the summit. If keen for a longer adventure, hiking up through Beddgelert Forest offers a verdant start to the trail. The higher you climb, the better the views get with the Nantlle Ridge and Snowdon both opening up.

Whilst hikes up Moel Hebog give you splendid views of Snowdonia, turn around to admire the vast Cardigan Bay, glinting in sunshine with its enormous, sandy estuary at Porthmadog. A cairn sits on the summit and you’ll spy Beddgelert languishing below. If you’ve got time when you get down, you can always visit Gelert’s grave. This is the burial place of Llywelyn the Great’s legendary dog who supposedly saved his infant son’s life but was killed by mistake. It’s just the kind of folklore Snowdonia is rich in.

Ascend Moel Hebog throughout the year but watch out for worsening weather and only hike in challenging winter conditions with the right equipment and experience. Find food and accommodation in Beddgelert.

    Hiking

Moel Hebog is Beddgelert’s peak; the mountain rises sheer and proud above the village like a protective guardian, tall and craggy from the east, rounded and green to the west. Its geology is the stuff of textbooks, and a cave on Hebog’s neighbouring offspring Moel yr Ogof once hid a Welsh Prince.

    Hiking

Moel Hebog has a rocky surface with a distinctive pointed top, although it appears more rounded from other sides. Due to the exposed rock, it is often visited by geology students. A large part of the mountain consists of tuff.
