The Lindwurm Fountain on Neuer Platz is Klagenfurt's most famous landmark. The chlorite slate figure was created at the end of the 16th century and commemorates the legend of the defeated Lindwurm. The fountain basin, wrought iron railing, and Hercules statue were added later. The fountain has been restored and relocated several times, most recently in 1972. Today, it stands as a symbol of history, myth, and identity in the heart of the city.

The Lindwurm fountain on Neuer Platz in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, dating from the 16th century, represents the landmark and heraldic animal, a Lindwurm.

The fountain was commissioned by the city in 1583 on the orders of the Carinthian estates. The work was long attributed to Ulrich and Andreas Vogelsang, but it was probably created by an unknown master. The material used was chlorite slate, which was mined from the nearby Kreuzbergl and also used in the construction of the country house in Klagenfurt. The Lindwurm was carved from a single block. The monumental sculpture shows the animal with its mouth wide open, from which water flows, and its wings folded. The shell appears to have been stamped, its tail is artfully curved. The striking formal language is intended to depict the threatening nature of the animal. The style can be interpreted as both Mannerist and Romanesque.
