St. Johannis is a Lutheran church in a simple baroque style with classical elements. With the support of Prince Leopold I, the church was completed in 1702.

The Johannis Church was an important focal point during the "Wende" 1989/90, to commemorate it was on the Western gallery the painting "No violence" by the Dessau artist Fridolin M. Kraska. However, much more famous are three panel paintings from the workshop of the Cranachs from the 16th century. Particularly noteworthy the "Dessau Supper" with the heads of the great German reformers in the disciples, e.g. Luther, Bugenhagen, Jonas, Melanchthon and George III. Originally they hung in the castle and Marienkirche.

St. Johannis was commissioned as a Lutheran church in 1702. A simple baroque style with classical elements characterizes the overall impression. Almost completely destroyed in 1944, it was rebuilt in 1955. At the beginning of the 1990s, the church received a new exterior plaster as part of a thorough renovation. In 2009 the portals were renewed.

The nave has a good 350 seats, with lofts and extra seating around 900 seats. In 1990 the large owl organ was built into the chancel, placing the music at the center of the service. In the accessible tower there are two bells and a mechanical clockwork that is over a hundred years old. The dials were restored in 2006. Seasonal ascents (166 steps!) And special cultural events have been offered since May 2008.
