In the majestic Johannbau you will find everything about the history of the city of Dessau. The building itself looks back on an impressive history. It was built between 1528 and 1533 on the remains of the medieval residential palace of the princes and dukes of Anhalt-Dessau. The Johannbau was thus one of the first and most important palace buildings of the early Renaissance.
Parts of the building fell victim to the air raid in March 1945. The restoration took place from 1990. Since 2005 you have been able to visit a permanent exhibition as well as changing exhibitions in the Johannbau in the Museum of City History and learn so much about the history of important personalities and institutions.
More information on exhibitions, opening times and prices can be found here: verwaltung.dessau-rosslau.de/kultur-tourismus/museum-fuer-stadtgeschichte/familieausstellung.html

The first Dessau residential palace was built in 1341 from the remains of Waldersee Castle and burned down in 1405 and 1467. The start of construction for the Johann building was probably in 1528.
