The Cathedral of Saint-Vincent de Saint-Malo is the city's most important church building and dominates the image of the old town (Intra-Muros). It was built between 1146 and 1163 on the foundations of an older church and is dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa. The building combines Romanesque and Gothic elements – the nave is Romanesque, while the choir and chapels are Gothic. Over the centuries, the cathedral was expanded several times and, after suffering severe damage during World War II, was completely restored, with the work only being completed in 1972.
