    Who still knows what a “deconsolidation office” is? Almost 100 years ago, this implemented what the victorious powers of the First World War ordered, namely the razing of the Cologne fortifications. The intermediate plant VIIIb on the Marienburg bank of the Rhine was also partially destroyed in accordance with the Versailles Treaty in 1926. However, more has been preserved here than in other parts of the fortress. Today the complex houses the Cologne Fortress Museum, which primarily aims to convey an authentic picture of life in the casemates. A permanent exhibition documents the entire fortress of Cologne, and outside there is a sculpture garden.
