In 1234 the battle of Altenesch raged here. The Stedinger, freedom-loving farmers from the Wesermarsch, brought together around 3,000 fighters, who, however, had no chance against the almost twice as large superiority of the Bremen and Oldenburgers. The fighting was concentrated in the immediate vicinity of today's St. Gallus Church, the predecessor of which burned out at the time. The brick foundations of the church are still under the church, and the victims of the battle are very likely buried here.
